Living and Non-Living Things

Class 2

🎯 Learning Objectives

📖 Let Us Begin!

Look around you. You can see a dog, a tree, a chair, and a stone. Some of these are alive and some are not.

Things that are alive are called living things. Things that are not alive are called non-living things.

Let us learn how to tell them apart!

What Makes Something a Living Thing?

Living things have special features. They:

Grow — A baby grows into a child, then into an adult. A seed grows into a plant.

Breathe — All living things need air. We breathe in and out. Plants also breathe.

Move — Animals walk, run, fly, or swim. Plants move slowly — they turn towards sunlight.

Need food — All living things need food to get energy. Animals eat food. Plants make their own food.

Feel — Living things can feel pain, heat, and cold.

Reproduce — Living things make babies or new plants. A dog has puppies. A plant makes seeds.

Ravi planted a mango seed. It grew into a small plant. The plant breathes, grows, and will one day make fruits. It is a living thing!

Mango tree, rose plant, grassStone, rock, sand, soil

A stone does not grow, breathe, or move on its own. It does not need food. So a stone is a non-living thing. A dog grows, breathes, moves, and needs food. So a dog is a living thing!
