Our Solar System

Class 2

🎯 Learning Objectives

📖 Let Us Begin!

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and seen the stars and the Moon? Our Earth is just one small part of a huge family called the Solar System.

The Solar System has the Sun at the centre, and eight planets going around it. Our Earth is the third planet from the Sun. It is the only planet where life exists!

India has its own space agency called ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) that sends rockets and satellites into space. India has even sent missions to the Moon and Mars!

The Solar System showing the Sun and eight planets in order

☀️ The Sun

The Sun is a huge ball of hot, glowing gas at the centre of our Solar System. It gives us light and heat. Without the Sun, there would be no life on Earth.

Fun Facts about the Sun
  • The Sun is so big that about 1.3 million Earths could fit inside it!
  • It takes 8 minutes for sunlight to reach Earth.
  • The Sun is about 150 million kilometres away from Earth.
  • The Sun is a star — the closest star to Earth.
  • The surface of the Sun is about 5,500°C hot!

🪐 The Eight Planets

The eight planets go around the Sun in a path called an orbit. Here they are in order from the Sun:

OrderPlanetFun Fact
1stMercurySmallest planet and closest to the Sun. Very hot in the day (430°C) and very cold at night (−180°C)!
2ndVenusBrightest planet in our sky. Called the "Morning Star" or "Evening Star." Hottest planet because of thick clouds.
3rdEarthOur home! The only planet with water, air, and life. Called the "Blue Planet" because of its oceans.
4thMarsCalled the "Red Planet" because its soil is red. India's Mangalyaan spacecraft visited Mars in 2014!
5thJupiterThe largest planet — 1,300 Earths could fit inside it! Has a giant storm called the Great Red Spot.
6thSaturnHas beautiful rings made of ice and rock. It is so light that it could float on water!
7thUranusSpins on its side like a rolling ball! Appears blue-green in colour.
8thNeptuneFarthest planet from the Sun. Has the strongest winds in the solar system — up to 2,000 km/hour!
Memory trick to remember the planets in order: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune)

🌙 The Moon

The Moon is Earth's natural satellite. It goes around the Earth. The Moon does not have its own light — it reflects light from the Sun.

Moon Facts
  • The Moon is about 384,000 km from Earth.
  • In 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the Moon.
  • The Moon has no air, no water, and no life.
  • We can see craters (big holes) on the Moon's surface.
  • The Moon looks different each night — these shapes are called phases (new moon, half moon, full moon).
  • India's Chandrayaan-3 successfully landed on the Moon's south pole in 2023! 🇮🇳

🌟 Amazing Space Facts

Did You Know?
  • A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus!
  • Jupiter has at least 95 moons!
  • Saturn's rings are made of billions of pieces of ice and rock.
  • There is no sound in space because there is no air.
  • Astronauts float in space because there is very little gravity.
  • One year on Neptune is equal to 165 Earth years!

🇮🇳 India in Space — ISRO

India's space agency is called ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). ISRO has done amazing things:

MissionWhat It Did
Chandrayaan-1 (2008)India's first mission to the Moon. Found water on the Moon!
Mangalyaan (2014)India's mission to Mars. India became the first country to reach Mars on its very first try!
Chandrayaan-3 (2023)Successfully landed on the Moon's south pole. India became the 4th country to land on the Moon!
India is very proud of ISRO! Indian scientists work very hard to explore space. Maybe one day, an Indian astronaut will walk on the Moon!
