Shapes (2D and 3D)

Class 2

🎯 Learning Objectives

📖 Let Us Begin!

Look around you! The wheel of a bicycle is round like a circle. A book looks like a rectangle. A birthday cap is like a cone. A cricket ball is like a sphere. Shapes are everywhere! We see flat shapes (called 2D shapes) and solid shapes (called 3D shapes) all around us. Let us learn about them.

2D and 3D shapes with real-life examples

2D Shapes (Flat Shapes)

2D shapes are flat. You can draw them on paper. They have sides (straight lines) and corners (where two sides meet).

ShapeSidesCornersSpecial FeatureExamples in Life
Circle0 (curved)0Perfectly roundCoin, bangle, wheel, roti
Square4 (all equal)4All sides same lengthHandkerchief, tile, carrom board
Triangle33Fewest sides possibleSamosa, tent, traffic sign
Rectangle4 (2 long, 2 short)4Opposite sides equalBook, door, window, TV screen
Oval0 (curved)0Like a stretched circleEgg, mirror, cricket ground
A square is a special rectangle where all 4 sides are equal!

3D Shapes (Solid Shapes)

3D shapes are solid. You can hold them in your hands. They have faces (flat surfaces), edges (where two faces meet), and corners/vertices (pointed tips).

ShapeFacesEdgesCornersExamples in Life
Sphere (Ball)1 curved00Cricket ball, orange, marble, globe
Cube6 (all square)128Dice, Rubik's cube, ice cube, sugar cube
Cuboid (Box)6 (rectangles)128Brick, book, matchbox, tiffin box
Cone1 flat + 1 curved11 (tip)Ice cream cone, birthday cap, funnel
Cylinder2 flat + 1 curved20Tin can, drum, glass, pipe
A sphere can roll in any direction. A cylinder can roll only forward and backward. A cube cannot roll at all!
