In English, we use three small but important words before nouns — a, an, and the. These words are called articles. They tell us whether we are talking about something general (any one) or something specific (a particular one). Without articles, our sentences would sound incomplete!
Articles are divided into two types:
We use "A" before words that begin with a consonant sound. Remember: it is the sound that matters, not just the letter!
| Example | Starting Sound | Why "A"? |
|---|---|---|
| a ball | /b/ — consonant | "ball" starts with a consonant sound |
| a mango | /m/ — consonant | "mango" starts with a consonant sound |
| a cat | /k/ — consonant | "cat" starts with a consonant sound |
| a dog | /d/ — consonant | "dog" starts with a consonant sound |
| a flower | /f/ — consonant | "flower" starts with a consonant sound |
| a school | /s/ — consonant | "school" starts with a consonant sound |
| a temple | /t/ — consonant | "temple" starts with a consonant sound |
| a rickshaw | /r/ — consonant | "rickshaw" starts with a consonant sound |
We use "An" before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). Again, listen to the sound the word starts with!
| Example | Starting Sound | Why "An"? |
|---|---|---|
| an apple | /æ/ — vowel | "apple" starts with a vowel sound |
| an elephant | /e/ — vowel | "elephant" starts with a vowel sound |
| an igloo | /i/ — vowel | "igloo" starts with a vowel sound |
| an orange | /o/ — vowel | "orange" starts with a vowel sound |
| an umbrella | /ʌ/ — vowel | "umbrella" starts with a vowel sound |
| an egg | /e/ — vowel | "egg" starts with a vowel sound |
| an owl | /aʊ/ — vowel | "owl" starts with a vowel sound |
| an ice cream | /aɪ/ — vowel | "ice" starts with a vowel sound |
We use "The" (the definite article) when we talk about:
| Sentence | Why "The"? |
|---|---|
| The sun rises in the east. | Only one sun — unique |
| The Taj Mahal is in Agra. | Specific monument — only one |
| Please close the window. | We know which window — specific |
| The Ganga is a holy river. | Specific river name |
| The book on your desk is mine. | We know which book — specific |
| The Himalayas are very tall. | Specific mountain range |
| The Prime Minister gave a speech. | Specific person — only one PM |
There are some cases where we do not use any article. This is important to remember!
| Rule | Examples | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Before proper nouns (names of people, cities, countries) | Ravi is my friend. (NOT: The Ravi) Delhi is the capital. (NOT: The Delhi) India is a great country. (NOT: The India) | Names are already specific — no article needed |
| Before meals | We eat breakfast at 8 am. Lunch is ready. Dinner was delicious. | Meals in general don't need articles |
| Before games and sports | Arjun plays cricket. Meena likes badminton. We play kabaddi after school. | Sports and games don't need articles |
| Before languages | She speaks Hindi. We learn English at school. | Language names don't need articles |
| Before subjects | I like Mathematics. Science is interesting. | School subjects don't need articles |
Some words look like they start with a vowel but actually start with a consonant sound. Some words look like they start with a consonant but actually start with a vowel sound. Always listen to the sound!

|---|---|---|
| hour | an hour | The "h" is silent — sounds like "our" (vowel sound) |
