Articles (A, An, The)

Class 3

🎯 Learning Objectives

📖 What Are Articles?

In English, we use three small but important words before nouns — a, an, and the. These words are called articles. They tell us whether we are talking about something general (any one) or something specific (a particular one). Without articles, our sentences would sound incomplete!

Articles are divided into two types:

  • Indefinite Articles: "A" and "An" — used when we talk about any one thing, not a specific one.
  • Definite Article: "The" — used when we talk about a specific or particular thing.

🔤 Using "A" — Before Consonant Sounds

We use "A" before words that begin with a consonant sound. Remember: it is the sound that matters, not just the letter!

ExampleStarting SoundWhy "A"?
a ball/b/ — consonant"ball" starts with a consonant sound
a mango/m/ — consonant"mango" starts with a consonant sound
a cat/k/ — consonant"cat" starts with a consonant sound
a dog/d/ — consonant"dog" starts with a consonant sound
a flower/f/ — consonant"flower" starts with a consonant sound
a school/s/ — consonant"school" starts with a consonant sound
a temple/t/ — consonant"temple" starts with a consonant sound

Sentences:
• Arjun bought a kite from the market.
• There is a cow in the field.
• Meena drew a picture of a peacock.
• I saw a monkey on the tree.

🔤 Using "An" — Before Vowel Sounds

We use "An" before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). Again, listen to the sound the word starts with!

ExampleStarting SoundWhy "An"?
an apple/æ/ — vowel"apple" starts with a vowel sound
an elephant/e/ — vowel"elephant" starts with a vowel sound
an igloo/i/ — vowel"igloo" starts with a vowel sound
an orange/o/ — vowel"orange" starts with a vowel sound
an umbrella/ʌ/ — vowel"umbrella" starts with a vowel sound
an egg/e/ — vowel"egg" starts with a vowel sound
an owl/aʊ/ — vowel"owl" starts with a vowel sound
an ice cream/aɪ/ — vowel"ice" starts with a vowel sound
Sentences:
• Sita ate an orange after lunch.
• We saw an elephant at the zoo.
• Ravi carried an umbrella to school.
• There is an ant on the sugar jar.

Using "The" — For Specific Things

We use "The" (the definite article) when we talk about:

SentenceWhy "The"?
The sun rises in the east.Only one sun — unique
The Taj Mahal is in Agra.Specific monument — only one
Please close the window. We know which window — specific
The Ganga is a holy river.Specific river name

The Himalayas are very tall.Specific mountain range

💡 Tip: If you can point to it and say "that one!", you probably need "the".

RuleExamplesExplanation
