📖 Introduction

In our family, we have a father and a mother, a brother and a sister, a grandfather (dada) and a grandmother (dadi). Some words are used for males and some for females. In English grammar, this is called gender. Let us learn about the four types of gender and many masculine-feminine pairs!

What is Gender in Grammar?

Gender tells us whether a noun is male, female, both, or neither. In English, there are four types of gender:

Indian Family Gender Pairs

In Indian families, we use special words for different relatives. Here are some common pairs:

💡 In Indian culture, we have different words for paternal and maternal grandparents. This is special to our language!

Common Gender (Both Male and Female)

Common gender nouns can be used for both males and females. We cannot tell if the person is male or female just from the word.

Neuter Gender (Non-Living Things)

Neuter gender is used for things that are neither male nor female — non-living objects, places, and ideas.

Examples: table, chair, book, pen, school, house, car, river, mountain, computer, phone, bag, clock, door, window

💡 Remember: Non-living things do not have a gender. We use "it" for neuter gender nouns.
