Read these two sentences:
"Ravi went to the market. Ravi bought some mangoes. Ravi came back home."
Does that sound strange? The name "Ravi" is repeated again and again! Now read this:
"Ravi went to the market. He bought some mangoes. He came back home."
Much better! The word "He" takes the place of "Ravi". Words like he, she, it, they, we, I, you are called pronouns.
A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun. We use pronouns so that we do not have to repeat the same noun again and again.
We use pronouns to:
Without: Meena likes painting. Meena paints every day. Meena's paintings are beautiful.
With: Meena likes painting. She paints every day. Her paintings are beautiful.
Personal pronouns are the most common pronouns. When they are used as the subject of a sentence (the one doing the action), we call them subject pronouns.
| Pronoun | Used For | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | The person speaking (myself) | I go to school every day. |
| You | The person being spoken to | You are my best friend. |
| He | A boy or man | Ravi is kind. He helps everyone. |
| She | A girl or woman | Meena sings well. She won a prize. |
| It | An animal or thing | The dog is hungry. It wants food. |
| We | The speaker + others (a group including me) | We play cricket after school. |
| They | Other people or things (not including me) | The children are happy. They are laughing. |
Look at how we replace nouns (names) with pronouns:
| Noun (Name) | Pronoun | Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Ravi | He | Ravi plays cricket. → He plays cricket. |
| Meena | She | Meena reads a book. → She reads a book. |
| The cat | It | The cat is sleeping. → It is sleeping. |
| Arjun and Sita | They | Arjun and Sita sing. → They sing. |
| The children | They | The children play. → They play. |
| Meena and I | We | Meena and I study. → We study. |
| The book | It | The book is new. → It is new. |
When a pronoun is used as the object of a sentence (the one receiving the action), we use object pronouns.
| Subject Pronoun | Object Pronoun | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | me | Ravi called me. |
| you | you | I will help you. |
| he | him | Meena saw him at the park. |
| she | her | Arjun gave the book to her. |
| it | it | The dog found it (the ball). |
| we | us | The teacher praised us. |
| they | them | We invited them to the party. |
Subject pronoun = does the action → "He kicked the ball."
Object pronoun = receives the action → "The ball hit him."
Possessive pronouns show that something belongs to someone. They answer the question "Whose?"
| Pronoun | Possessive Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | my | This is my pencil. |
| you | your | Is this your bag? |
| he | his | Ravi lost his book. |
| she | her | Meena loves her doll. |
| it | its | The bird is in its nest. |
| we | our | Our school is big. |
| they | their | The children brought their lunch boxes. |
