📖 What Is a Pronoun?

Read these two sentences:

"Ravi went to the market. Ravi bought some mangoes. Ravi came back home."

Does that sound strange? The name "Ravi" is repeated again and again! Now read this:

"Ravi went to the market. He bought some mangoes. He came back home."

Much better! The word "He" takes the place of "Ravi". Words like he, she, it, they, we, I, you are called pronouns.

A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun. We use pronouns so that we do not have to repeat the same noun again and again.

Think: What would happen if we had no pronouns? Every sentence would repeat the same name or word!

Why Do We Use Pronouns?

We use pronouns to:

Example — Without and With Pronouns

Without: Meena likes painting. Meena paints every day. Meena's paintings are beautiful.

With: Meena likes painting. She paints every day. Her paintings are beautiful.

Personal Pronouns (Subject Pronouns)

Personal pronouns are the most common pronouns. When they are used as the subject of a sentence (the one doing the action), we call them subject pronouns.

Remember: "I" is always written as a capital letter, even in the middle of a sentence!

Look at how we replace nouns (names) with pronouns:

Object Pronouns

When a pronoun is used as the object of a sentence (the one receiving the action), we use object pronouns.

How to Tell the Difference

Subject pronoun = does the action → "He kicked the ball."

Object pronoun = receives the action → "The ball hit him."

Possessive Pronouns (Showing Ownership)

Possessive pronouns show that something belongs to someone. They answer the question "Whose?"

Using Pronouns Correctly in Sentences

Here are some rules to remember when using pronouns:

Rule 1: Match the pronoun to the noun it replaces

✅ Meena is smart. She studies hard. (Meena = girl = she)

❌ Meena is smart. He studies hard. (Wrong! Meena is a girl.)

Rule 2: Use "I" as subject, "me" as object

I went to the park. (I = subject, doing the action)

✅ Ravi called me. (me = object, receiving the action)

Me went to the park. (Wrong!)

Rule 3: Use "they" for more than one person or thing

✅ Arjun and Sita are friends. They play together.

✅ The books are on the table. They are new.

Rule 4: Use "it" for animals and things

✅ The parrot is green. It can talk.

✅ The train is fast. It goes to Delhi.
