Learning Objectives
Let Us Begin!

Who is the first person you see when you wake up in the morning? It is usually someone from your family -- your mother, father, or grandparent.

A family is a group of people who are related to each other and live together or stay connected with love and care. Let us learn about the people in our families!

Members of a Family

A family has many members. Here are the common family members:

RelationWho are they?
ParentsMother (Amma/Maa) and Father (Appa/Papa)
GrandparentsGrandfather (Dada/Thatha) and Grandmother (Dadi/Paati)
SiblingsBrother (Bhaiya) and Sister (Didi/Akka)
UncleFather's or mother's brother (Chacha/Mama)
AuntFather's or mother's sister (Bua/Maasi/Chachi)
CousinUncle's or aunt's children

Think about it: How many members are there in your family? Can you name all of them?

Joint Family and Nuclear Family

A joint family is a big family where grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins all live together in one house. Ravi lives with his grandparents, parents, uncle, aunt, and two cousins. That is a joint family.

A nuclear family is a small family with only parents and their children. Meena lives with her mother, father, and younger brother. That is a nuclear family.

Both types of families are good. What matters is that family members love and care for each other.

What Family Members Do for Us

Every family member helps in some way:

Parents take care of us, send us to school, cook food, and earn money for the family.

Grandparents tell us stories, teach us good values, and share their experience.

Siblings play with us, share things, and help with homework.

Think about it: What does your grandmother or grandfather do that makes you happy?

Children can also help their family in many ways:

- Keep your room and books tidy.

- Help set the table before meals.

- Water the plants at home.

- Speak politely to everyone.

- Take care of younger siblings.

Respecting Elders

In India, we show respect to our elders by touching their feet, saying "Namaste," listening to their advice, and speaking to them politely. Elders have more experience and wisdom. We should always be kind and helpful to them.
