Learning Objectives
Let Us Begin!

What did you eat for breakfast today? Maybe roti with sabzi, or idli with chutney, or bread with butter?

Food gives us the power to run, play, study, and grow. Without food, we would feel weak and tired. That is why eating good food every day is so important.

Let us learn about the food we eat and where it comes from!

Where Does Our Food Come From?

All the food we eat comes from two main sources: plants and animals.

Food from Plants

Part of PlantFood We Get
RootsCarrot, radish (mooli), beetroot, potato (stem tuber)
StemsSugarcane, potato, ginger
LeavesSpinach (palak), cabbage, mint (pudina), coriander (dhaniya)
FlowersCauliflower (gobi), banana flower
FruitsMango, apple, banana, orange, tomato
SeedsRice, wheat, dal, rajma, peanuts

Think about it: We eat different parts of different plants. We eat the root of a carrot but the fruit of a mango!

Food from Animals

Raw Food and Cooked Food

Raw food is food that we eat without cooking. Examples: fruits (apple, banana), salad (cucumber, tomato), milk.

Cooked food is food that we heat or cook before eating. Examples: rice, dal, roti, sabzi, idli.

Some foods must be cooked before eating because raw food like rice or dal is hard and cannot be eaten directly. Cooking makes food soft, tasty, and safe to eat.

Can you eat raw rice? No! But you can eat a raw carrot. Some foods need cooking and some do not.
