Let Us Begin!

Every country has special symbols that make it proud. India also has many national symbols. You see the national flag on Republic Day and Independence Day. You sing the national anthem at school.

These symbols tell the world who we are as a nation. Let us learn about the national symbols of India!

National Flag

Our national flag is called the Tiranga (Tricolour). It has three horizontal stripes:

Saffron (top): Stands for courage and sacrifice.

White (middle): Stands for peace and truth.

Green (bottom): Stands for growth and fertility of the land.

In the centre of the white stripe, there is a navy blue wheel called the Ashoka Chakra. It has 24 spokes and stands for progress.

National Anthem

Our national anthem is "Jana Gana Mana." It was written by Rabindranath Tagore. It was adopted as the national anthem on 24 January 1950. It takes about 52 seconds to sing the full anthem. We stand at attention when the national anthem is played.

National Emblem

Our national emblem is the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. It shows four lions standing back to back. Below the lions, the words "Satyameva Jayate" are written, which means "Truth Alone Triumphs." The national emblem is used on all government documents.

National Animal, Bird, Flower, and Fruit

National Animal: The Bengal Tiger. It is strong and majestic. Project Tiger was started to protect tigers in India.

National Bird: The Peacock. It is known for its beautiful, colourful feathers. It dances when it rains.

National Flower: The Lotus. It grows in muddy water but blooms beautifully. It stands for purity.

National Fruit: The Mango. It is called the "King of Fruits." India grows many varieties of mangoes.
