Transport

Class 3

🎯 Learning Objectives

πŸ“– Let Us Begin!

Every day, we travel from one place to another β€” to school, to the market, to our grandparents' house. Have you ever thought about how people and goods move from one place to another?

The means by which people and goods move from one place to another is called transport. Without transport, we would have to walk everywhere!

India is a large country with many types of transport β€” from bullock carts in villages to metro trains in big cities. Let us learn about the wonderful world of transport!

What is Transport? Why Do We Need It?

Transport means carrying people or goods from one place to another. The vehicles we use for this are called means of transport.

We need transport to:

Imagine if there were no buses, trains, or cars! How would you go to school? How would fruits from Kashmir or Kerala reach your city? Transport connects all parts of India!

Types of Transport

Transport is divided into three types based on where the vehicles move:

1. Land Transport (Road and Rail)

Vehicles that move on land β€” on roads or railway tracks.

VehicleUsed ForRuns On
BusCarrying many people in cities and between citiesRoad (diesel/CNG)
CarFamily travel, personal useRoad (petrol/diesel/electric)
TrainLong-distance travel, carrying heavy goodsRailway tracks (diesel/electric)
BicycleShort distances, exercise, eco-friendlyRoad (no fuel needed!)
Auto-rickshawShort trips in cities and townsRoad (CNG/petrol)
MetroFast travel within big cities (Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru)Elevated/underground tracks (electric)
Bullock cartCarrying goods in villagesMud roads (pulled by bullocks)
Cycle-rickshawShort trips, no pollutionRoad (human-powered)
TruckCarrying heavy goods between citiesRoad (diesel)
Motorcycle/ScooterPersonal travel for 1–2 peopleRoad (petrol/electric)
Land transport vehicles β€” bus, car, train, bicycle, auto-rickshaw, metro, bullock cart

2. Water Transport

Vehicles that move on water β€” rivers, seas, and oceans.

VehicleUsed ForWhere Used
BoatFishing, crossing rivers, short tripsRivers, lakes (Kerala backwaters, Varanasi Ganga)
ShipCarrying goods and people across oceansSeas and oceans (Mumbai port, Chennai port)
FerryCarrying people across rivers/harboursRivers, harbours (Kolkata, Kochi, Goa)
SteamerPassenger travel on large riversRivers (Brahmaputra in Assam, Sundarbans)
HouseboatLiving and travelling on waterKerala backwaters (Alleppey, Kumarakom)
Water transport β€” boat, ship, ferry, Kerala houseboat

3. Air Transport

Vehicles that fly in the air β€” the fastest means of transport!

VehicleUsed ForSpecial Feature
AeroplaneTravelling long distances very fastFastest transport; flies above clouds
HelicopterRescue, reaching difficult places, VIP travelCan take off and land without a runway
Hot air balloonSightseeing, fun ridesUses hot air to rise up

Air transport is the fastest but also the most expensive. It is used when we need to travel very long distances quickly β€” like going from Delhi to Chennai or to another country.

Air transport β€” aeroplane, helicopter, hot air balloon
Did you know? India has over 100 airports! The busiest airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. Air India is India's national airline.

Public Transport vs Private Transport

Public TransportPrivate Transport
Used by many people togetherUsed by one person or family
Bus, train, metro, auto-rickshaw, ferryCar, bicycle, motorcycle, scooter
Cheaper β€” we pay a fare/ticketMore expensive β€” we buy and maintain the vehicle
Follows a fixed route and timetableGoes wherever we want, anytime
Less pollution (carries many people at once)More pollution (one car = one family)
Examples: DTC bus (Delhi), BEST bus (Mumbai), Mumbai local trainExamples: family car, papa's scooter
Using public transport is better for the environment! One bus can carry 50 people β€” that means 50 fewer cars on the road. Less traffic, less pollution!

Old Transport vs Modern Transport

Transport has changed a lot over time! Long ago, people used animals and simple vehicles. Today, we have fast machines.

Old TimesModern TimesWhat Changed
Bullock cartCar, Bus, TruckAnimals replaced by engines
Horse / Horse carriage (Tonga)Train, MetroFaster, carries more people
Wooden boat / RaftShip, SteamerBigger, safer, engine-powered
Walking long distancesAeroplaneTravel in hours instead of months!
Palanquin (Palki/Doli)Car, Auto-rickshawNo need for human carriers
Camel (in deserts)Jeep, BusFaster in sand, air-conditioned
Old vs modern transport comparison
The first train in India ran on 16 April 1853 β€” from Mumbai (Bombay) to Thane. It was only 34 km! Today, Indian Railways covers over 68,000 km of tracks across the country.

Traffic Rules and Road Safety

Roads can be dangerous if we don't follow rules. Traffic rules keep everyone safe!

Traffic Lights (Traffic Signals)

LightMeaningWhat to Do
πŸ”΄ RedSTOPAll vehicles must stop. Do not cross.
🟑 YellowGET READYSlow down. Be ready to stop or go.
🟒 GreenGOVehicles can move. Pedestrians wait.

Important Road Safety Rules

Road safety scene β€” traffic light, zebra crossing, helmet, seat belt

Indian Railways and Metro

India has one of the largest railway networks in the world! Here are some amazing facts:

Metro Rail

Metro trains run in big cities to reduce traffic and pollution:

CityMetro NameSpecial Feature
KolkataKolkata MetroIndia's first metro (started 1984)
DelhiDelhi MetroLargest metro network in India
MumbaiMumbai MetroHelps reduce crowding on local trains
BengaluruNamma MetroElevated metro (runs above ground)
ChennaiChennai MetroUnderground + elevated sections
The Delhi Metro is so popular that it carries about 60 lakh passengers every day! It runs on electricity and is much less polluting than cars and buses.

Fuels Used by Vehicles

Vehicles need fuel (energy) to move. Different vehicles use different fuels:

FuelVehicles That Use ItGood or Bad for Environment?
PetrolCars, motorcycles, scooters, auto-rickshawsCauses air pollution (smoke)
DieselBuses, trucks, trains, some carsCauses more pollution than petrol
CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)Auto-rickshaws, buses (Delhi, Mumbai)Less pollution than petrol/diesel
ElectricityElectric cars, metro trains, electric buses, e-rickshawsVery clean β€” no smoke!
Solar energySolar-powered vehicles (new technology)Cleanest β€” uses sunlight!
No fuel (human power)Bicycle, cycle-rickshaw, walkingBest for environment β€” zero pollution!
Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming very popular in India! They don't produce smoke and are quieter. Many cities now have electric buses and e-rickshaws.
