Weather and Seasons

Class 3

🎯 Learning Objectives

📖 Introduction

Have you noticed how some days are hot and sunny, while other days are cold or rainy? The condition of the air around us — whether it is hot, cold, wet, or dry — is called weather.

In India, we experience different types of weather throughout the year. Our country has three main seasons: Summer, Monsoon (Rainy), and Winter. Each season brings its own special weather, food, clothes, and festivals!

Let us learn about weather and seasons and how they affect our daily lives.

What is Weather?

Weather is the condition of the air at a particular place and time. It can change every day or even every hour!

Here are the different types of weather:

Weather TypeWhat It Looks LikeHow It Feels
☀️ SunnyClear blue sky, bright sunshineHot and bright; we feel warm
☁️ CloudySky covered with grey or white cloudsCool; sun is hidden
🌧️ RainyDark clouds, water falls from skyWet and cool; puddles form
💨 WindyTrees sway, papers fly, dust blowsBreezy; can be cold or warm
🌫️ FoggyWhite mist covers everything; hard to see farCold and damp; common in winter mornings
⛈️ StormyThunder, lightning, heavy rain, strong windsScary; we stay indoors
Six types of weather — sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, foggy, stormy
Weather changes from day to day. Today might be sunny, but tomorrow could be rainy! That's why we check the weather before going out.

What is Climate?

Climate is the usual weather of a place over a long time (many years). Weather changes daily, but climate stays mostly the same.

WeatherClimate
Changes every dayStays the same for years
"Today is rainy""Mumbai gets heavy rain every July"
Short-term (hours/days)Long-term (years)
Can be different tomorrowDoes not change quickly
Examples of Climate in India:
  • Rajasthan — Hot and dry climate (desert). Very little rain.
  • Kashmir — Cold climate. Snowfall in winter.
  • Cherrapunji (Meghalaya) — Very wet climate. One of the rainiest places on Earth!
  • Chennai — Hot and humid climate near the sea.

India's Three Main Seasons

India has three main seasons. Each season lasts for a few months and brings different weather.

☀️ 1. Summer Season (Grishma Ritu) — March to June

FeatureDetails
WeatherVery hot and dry; temperature can reach 45°C in some places
Hottest placesRajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha (Maharashtra)
ClothesLight cotton clothes, white/light colours, hats, sunglasses
FoodMangoes, watermelon, ice cream, lassi, nimbu paani, sugarcane juice
ActivitiesSummer holidays! Swimming, playing indoors, visiting hill stations
FestivalsHoli (March), Baisakhi (April), Rath Yatra (June/July)
Rajasthan's Thar Desert can get as hot as 50°C in summer! People there wear turbans and loose clothes to stay cool.

🌧️ 2. Monsoon / Rainy Season (Varsha Ritu) — July to September

FeatureDetails
WeatherHeavy rainfall, dark clouds, thunder and lightning
Rainiest placesCherrapunji (Meghalaya), Western Ghats, Assam, Kerala
ClothesRaincoat, umbrella, gumboots (waterproof shoes)
FoodPakoras, chai, corn (bhutta), khichdi, hot soup
ActivitiesPaper boats in puddles, watching rain, indoor games
FestivalsTeej (July/August), Onam (August/September), Janmashtami
ImportanceFarmers plant crops (rice, wheat); rivers and lakes fill up; trees turn green
India three seasons — summer, monsoon, winter with activities

❄️ 3. Winter Season (Sheet Ritu) — November to February

FeatureDetails
WeatherCold, foggy mornings, short days, long nights
Coldest placesKashmir, Ladakh, Shimla, Darjeeling, Delhi (fog)
ClothesSweaters, jackets, woollen caps, gloves, shawls, socks
FoodGajar ka halwa, til ladoo, hot chocolate, soup, sarson ka saag
ActivitiesSitting in the sun, bonfires, playing outdoors in the afternoon
FestivalsDiwali (Oct/Nov), Christmas (December), Makar Sankranti (January), Lohri, Pongal, Republic Day
In Kashmir, temperatures drop below 0°C and Dal Lake can freeze! Children there make snowmen and have snowball fights.

How Seasons Affect Us

Seasons change many things in our daily life:

What ChangesSummerMonsoonWinter
ClothesCotton, light coloursRaincoat, umbrellaWoollen, layers
FoodCold drinks, fruitsHot snacks, chaiHot food, sweets
ActivitiesSwimming, holidaysIndoor gamesBonfires, kite flying
FestivalsHoli, BaisakhiTeej, OnamDiwali, Makar Sankranti
FruitsMango, watermelon, litchiJamun, plum, peachOrange, guava, apple

Weather Instruments

Scientists use special tools called weather instruments to measure and predict weather:

InstrumentWhat It MeasuresHow It Works
🌡️ ThermometerTemperature (how hot or cold)Mercury rises when hot, falls when cold. Measured in °C.
🌧️ Rain GaugeRainfall (how much rain fell)Collects rainwater in a measuring tube. Measured in mm.
🌬️ Wind VaneWind direction (where wind comes from)Arrow points in the direction the wind is blowing from.
Weather instruments — thermometer, rain gauge, wind vane
Did You Know? The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Delhi predicts weather for the whole country. They tell us when monsoon will arrive and warn about cyclones!

How Animals and Plants Respond to Seasons

Animals and plants also change their behaviour with the seasons:

ResponseWhat HappensExamples
MigrationAnimals travel to warmer places in winterSiberian Crane comes to India; butterflies travel long distances
HibernationSome animals sleep through winter to save energyBears, frogs, snakes, squirrels go into deep sleep
Shedding leavesTrees drop leaves in autumn/winter to save waterPeepal, Neem, Banyan shed leaves before summer
New leaves & flowersTrees grow new leaves and bloom in springGulmohar, Amaltas bloom in summer; mango trees flower
Thick fur/feathersAnimals grow thicker coats in winterDogs, cats, horses grow thicker fur in cold months
Storing foodAnimals collect and store food before winterSquirrels store nuts; ants store food grains
The Siberian Crane travels over 5,000 km from Russia to India every winter! It visits Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur, Rajasthan.
