You already know that we use "a" before words that begin with a consonant sound and "an" before words that begin with a vowel sound. But did you know that some words can trick you?
The word "hour" starts with the letter h, but the h is silent. It sounds like "our." So we say "an hour", not "a hour." Surprised? Let us learn more such tricky cases!
"A" is used before a word that begins with a consonant sound: a ball, a cat, a dog, a mango.
"An" is used before a word that begins with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u): an apple, an egg, an igloo, an orange, an umbrella.
"The" is used when we talk about a specific person or thing: "Give me the red book" (a particular book).
Remember: Articles depend on the SOUND of the word, not just the letter it starts with!
Some words begin with the letter h, but the h is silent -- you do not say it. The word starts with a vowel sound. So we use "an".
| Word | Why "An"? | Correct Usage |
|---|---|---|
| hour | h is silent; sounds like "our" | an hour |
| honest | h is silent; sounds like "onest" | an honest man |
| honour | h is silent; sounds like "onour" | an honour |
| heir | h is silent; sounds like "air" | an heir |
"We waited for an hour at the railway station in Mumbai."
"Gandhiji was an honest leader."
"It is an honour to receive this prize."
Some words begin with a vowel letter (like u or e), but they make a consonant sound (like "yoo" or "wun"). So we use "a", not "an."
| Word | Why "A"? | Correct Usage |
|---|---|---|
| university | sounds like "yoo-niversity" | a university |
| uniform | sounds like "yoo-niform" | a uniform |
| useful | sounds like "yoo-sful" | a useful book |
