Let Us Begin!

Every day, many people work hard to make our lives easier and safer. The police officer who guards our streets, the doctor who treats us when we are sick, the teacher who helps us learn, and the farmer who grows our food -- they are all community helpers.

In this lesson, we will take a deeper look at the different types of services these helpers provide and learn about some exciting new occupations that did not exist when our grandparents were young!

How Occupations Have Changed Over Time

Long ago, most people in India were farmers. They grew their own food and made things by hand. There were no computers, aeroplanes, or mobile phones.

Over time, new inventions brought new jobs. When trains came to India, we needed engine drivers and station masters. When telephones were invented, we needed telephone operators. Today, many old jobs have changed or disappeared, and many new jobs have been created.

Examples of Change

Then: People sent letters through the postman. Now: People also send emails using computers.

Then: Clothes were washed by a washerman (dhobi) by hand. Now: Many homes have washing machines, but dhobis still work in many parts of India.

Then: There were no aeroplanes. Now: Pilots fly planes carrying hundreds of passengers across India and the world.

New-Age Occupations

Today, there are many exciting jobs that did not exist before:

OccupationWhat They Do
Software EngineerWrites programs for computers and mobile apps
PilotFlies aeroplanes to carry passengers and goods
ScientistStudies nature and invents new things (like ISRO scientists who send rockets to space)
AstronautTravels to space to do research (Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian in space)
Environmental ScientistStudies and protects the environment from pollution

Think about it: What new jobs do you think will exist when you grow up?

Every Job Is Important

No job is big or small. Every worker is important for the community. Without the farmer, we would have no food. Without the sweeper, our streets would be dirty. Without the teacher, we would not learn. We must respect every person and the work they do.

Example: A Day Without Helpers

Imagine a day without any community helpers. There would be no one to drive the bus, no one to teach in school, no one to sell vegetables at the market, and no one to fix the electricity if it goes off. Our life would come to a stop! That is why every job matters.
