Nisha had the most wonderful day. Her class went on a school picnic to India Gate in New Delhi. When she came home, she wanted to remember every moment of the day. Her mother gave her a small notebook and said, "Write it all down in your diary, Nisha. Years from now, you can read it and smile."
A diary is like a personal friend you can share everything with -- your happy moments, sad feelings, exciting adventures, and everyday events. Let us learn how to write a diary entry!
What is a Diary?
A diary is a personal record where you write about the events of your day and how you felt about them. It is private -- you write it for yourself. A single piece of writing in a diary is called a diary entry.
Format of a Diary Entry
| Part | What to Write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Date | Write the date at the top left or right | 15th November, 2024 |
| 2. Day | Write the day of the week | Friday |
| 3. Greeting | Begin with "Dear Diary" | Dear Diary, |
| 4. Body | Write what happened and how you felt (4-6 sentences) | Today was a special day... |
| 5. Sign off | End with your name | Nisha |
Think about it: A diary entry is like a letter to yourself. You start with "Dear Diary" just like you would start a letter with "Dear Friend."
Important Rules for Diary Writing
1. Write in first person. Use words like I, me, my, we, and our. You are writing about yourself!
2. Write in past tense. You are writing about things that already happened. Use words like went, saw, felt, played, ate.
3. Include your feelings. A diary is not just about what happened -- it is about how you felt. Were you happy, excited, nervous, proud, or sad?
4. Be honest. A diary is private. You can write your true thoughts and feelings.
5. Keep it simple. Write in short, clear sentences. You do not need fancy words.
Think about it: Which sounds more like a diary entry? (A) "The children went to the park." OR (B) "I went to the park with my friends and I felt so happy!" -- (B) is better because it uses "I" and includes feelings.
What to Include in the Body
When writing the body of your diary entry, try to answer these questions:
-- What happened today? (the event)
-- Where did it happen? (the place)
-- Who was with you? (the people)
-- What did you do? (the actions)
-- How did you feel? (your emotions)
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Diary | A personal book where you write about daily events and feelings |
| Diary entry | A single piece of writing in a diary, usually about one day |
| First person | Writing using "I," "me," "my," and "we" |
| Past tense | Words that show something already happened (went, saw, played) |
| Sign off | Writing your name at the end |

Dear Diary,
Today was one of the best days of my life! Our school organised a picnic to India Gate in New Delhi. We left school at 8 o'clock in the morning by bus. My best friend Aarav sat next to me and we sang songs all the way.
When we reached India Gate, I was amazed by how tall and grand it looked. Our teacher told us that it was built to honour the brave soldiers of India. We took many photographs together. After that, we sat on the green lawns and ate the lunch our mothers had packed -- I had aloo paratha and mango pickle.
We played games like passing the parcel and musical chairs. I won a small prize in musical chairs! We returned to school by 4 o'clock. I felt tired but very happy. I will never forget this wonderful day.

Monday
Dear Diary,
It rained very heavily today. When I woke up in the morning, the sky was dark and grey. By the time I finished breakfast, the rain started pouring down. My mother said I could not go out to play. I felt a little disappointed at first, but then my sister Kavya and I made paper boats and floated them in the puddles near our door. We also drank hot chai with pakoras that Amma made. It turned out to be a cosy and fun day after all!
