Means of Transport

Class 2

🎯 Learning Objectives

📖 Let Us Begin!

How do you come to school? Do you walk, come by bus, or come by car? The ways we travel from one place to another are called means of transport.

Transport helps us go to school, work, and other places. It also helps carry goods from one place to another.

Let us learn about the different means of transport!

Types of Transport

Transport is grouped into three types based on where it travels:

Three types of transport — Land, Water, Air

Land Transport — travels on roads and rails.

Water Transport — travels on rivers and seas.

Air Transport — travels in the sky.

Land Transport

Land transport moves on roads and railway tracks. It is the most common type of transport.

VehicleAbout It
BusCarries many people. Used for going to school and work.
CarCarries a few people. Used by families.
TrainRuns on railway tracks. Carries many people over long distances.
BicycleHas two wheels. We pedal it. Good for short distances.
Auto-rickshawThree-wheeled vehicle. Very common in Indian cities.
Ravi comes to school by bus. His father goes to work by bicycle. His family goes on trips by train. They use land transport every day!

Water Transport

Water transport moves on rivers, lakes, and seas.

Boat: A small vessel used on rivers and lakes. Fishermen use boats.

Ship: A very large vessel that travels on the sea. It carries goods and people across oceans.

Ferry: A boat that carries people across a river or lake.

Air Transport

Air transport moves in the sky. It is the fastest way to travel.

Aeroplane: Carries many people. Used to travel to faraway places quickly.

Helicopter: Can land in small spaces. Used for rescue work and in hilly areas.

Meena's family went to Delhi by aeroplane. It took only two hours! By train, it would take much longer. Aeroplanes are very fast!

Old and New Transport

Old TransportNew Transport
Bullock cart (pulled by oxen)Electric bus / Metro train
Horse carriage (tonga)Electric car
Rowing boatMotor boat / Speed boat
In villages, bullock carts are still used. In cities, we have metro trains and electric buses. Transport has changed a lot over the years!
