๐Ÿ“– Let Us Begin!

How do you know when your birthday is coming? How does your school decide when summer holidays start? We use a calendar!

A calendar is like a big chart that shows us all the days, weeks, and months in a year. It helps us plan our activities, remember important dates like festivals and exams, and know which day of the week it is today.

Let's learn everything about calendars โ€” months, days, weeks, and even the special leap year!

The 12 Months of the Year

A year has 12 months. Each month has a different number of days. Let's learn them all:

No.MonthDaysNo.MonthDays
1January317July31
2February28 or 298August31
3March319September30
4April3010October31
5May3111November30
6June3012December31
12 months of the year arranged in a circle showing the annual cycle

Easy Way to Remember Days in Each Month:

๐ŸŽต Rhyme to Remember

"Thirty days has September, April, June, and November.
All the rest have thirty-one,
except February alone,
which has twenty-eight days clear,
and twenty-nine in each leap year."

Knuckle Trick: Make two fists and put them together. The knuckles (bumps) are months with 31 days. The valleys (dips) between knuckles are months with 30 days (or 28/29 for February).

Knuckle trick showing which months have 30 or 31 days

The 7 Days of the Week

A week has 7 days. Here they are in order:

Day 1Day 2Day 3Day 4Day 5Day 6Day 7
SundayMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturday

Important facts:

Think about it: If today is Wednesday, what day will it be after 7 days? It will be Wednesday again! After 14 days? Still Wednesday! Because every 7 days, the same day comes back.
Example: Finding a Day After Some Days

Today is Monday. What day will it be after 10 days?

Solution: 10 รท 7 = 1 week and 3 extra days. So count 3 days after Monday: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Answer: Thursday.

Understanding a Year

Let's learn some important facts about a year:

Months in a year12
Weeks in a year52 (and 1 or 2 extra days)
Days in a normal year365
Days in a leap year366
First monthJanuary
Last monthDecember

Leap Year

Most years, February has 28 days. But every 4 years, February gets one extra day and has 29 days. This special year is called a leap year.

How to check if a year is a leap year: Divide the year by 4. If it divides exactly (no remainder), it is a leap year.

Examples of Leap Years

2020 รท 4 = 505 (exact) โ†’ Leap year โœ“

2024 รท 4 = 506 (exact) โ†’ Leap year โœ“

2025 รท 4 = 506 remainder 1 โ†’ Not a leap year โœ—

2028 รท 4 = 507 (exact) โ†’ Leap year โœ“

โญ Remember
  • Normal year = 365 days, Leap year = 366 days
  • The extra day goes to February (28 โ†’ 29)
  • Leap years: 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032...
  • A person born on 29th February celebrates their birthday only once in 4 years!
