Tables Drill

Class 3

๐ŸŽฏ Learning Objectives

๐Ÿ“– Let Us Begin!

Multiplication tables are the building blocks of mathematics. When you know your tables by heart, you can solve problems faster โ€” whether it's calculating the cost of 7 pencils at โ‚น6 each, finding how many runs a batsman scored in 8 overs at 6 runs per over, or sharing 36 sweets equally among 4 friends.

In Class 3, you need to master tables from 2 to 12. This lesson will help you revise all tables, learn smart tricks to remember them, and practise until you can answer any multiplication fact in seconds!

Tips and Tricks for Remembering Tables

Some tables are tricky! Here are smart ways to remember them:

๐Ÿ–๏ธ The Finger Trick for Table of 9

Hold both hands in front of you with all 10 fingers up. To multiply 9 by any number (1 to 10), fold down that finger from the left.

Example: 9 ร— 4

Fold down the 4th finger from the left. Count fingers to the left of the folded finger = 3. Count fingers to the right = 6. Answer = 36!

Example: 9 ร— 7

Fold down the 7th finger. Left = 6, Right = 3. Answer = 63!

This works for 9 ร— 1 all the way to 9 ร— 10!

Finger trick for 9 times table โ€” showing hands with fingers demonstrating 9x4=36

โœ–๏ธ Doubling Trick for Even Tables

If you know one table, you can find the next even table by doubling!

Table of 4 = Double the table of 2

2 ร— 6 = 12, so 4 ร— 6 = 24 (double of 12)

Table of 6 = Double the table of 3

3 ร— 7 = 21, so 6 ร— 7 = 42 (double of 21)

Table of 8 = Double the table of 4

4 ร— 8 = 32, so 8 ร— 8 = 64 (double of 32)

๐Ÿ”Ÿ Easy Tricks for Tables of 10 and 11

Table of 10: Just add a zero! 10 ร— 7 = 70, 10 ร— 12 = 120.

Table of 11 (up to 9): Repeat the digit! 11 ร— 3 = 33, 11 ร— 7 = 77.

Table of 11 (10 and above): 11 ร— 10 = 110, 11 ร— 11 = 121, 11 ร— 12 = 132.

๐Ÿ”„ The Swap Trick (Commutative Property)

Remember: a ร— b = b ร— a. If you forget 7 ร— 8, think of 8 ร— 7 instead โ€” same answer (56)! You only need to learn half the facts.

๐Ÿ”ข Digit Sum Trick for Table of 9

In the 9 times table, the digits of every answer add up to 9:

9 ร— 2 = 18 โ†’ 1 + 8 = 9  |  9 ร— 3 = 27 โ†’ 2 + 7 = 9  |  9 ร— 4 = 36 โ†’ 3 + 6 = 9

9 ร— 5 = 45 โ†’ 4 + 5 = 9  |  9 ร— 6 = 54 โ†’ 5 + 4 = 9  |  9 ร— 7 = 63 โ†’ 6 + 3 = 9

Also notice: the tens digit is always one less than the number you multiply by!

5๏ธโƒฃ Table of 5 Pattern

All answers in the 5 times table end in 0 or 5.

Multiply by an even number โ†’ ends in 0 (5 ร— 4 = 20, 5 ร— 8 = 40)

Multiply by an odd number โ†’ ends in 5 (5 ร— 3 = 15, 5 ร— 7 = 35)

Multiplication Grid (Tables 2โ€“12)

This grid shows all multiplication facts at a glance. Find one number on the top row and another on the left column โ€” where they meet is the answer!

Real-Life Uses of Multiplication Tables

Multiplication is everywhere in daily life! Here are some examples from India:

๐Ÿ›’ Shopping: Ravi buys 7 notebooks at โ‚น8 each. Total cost = 7 ร— 8 = โ‚น56.

๐Ÿ Cricket: A batsman scores 6 runs every over. In 9 overs = 6 ร— 9 = 54 runs.

๐Ÿฌ Sharing: Meena has 48 toffees to share equally among 6 friends. Each gets 48 รท 6 = 8 toffees (using 6 ร— 8 = 48).

๐ŸšŒ Transport: A school bus makes 4 trips daily. Each trip carries 12 students. Total = 4 ร— 12 = 48 students.

๐ŸŒณ Planting: A farmer plants 9 rows of mango saplings with 11 saplings in each row. Total = 9 ร— 11 = 99 saplings.

โญ Key Points to Remember

  • Tables 2 to 12 must be memorised for quick mental maths.
  • Finger trick for 9: Fold the nth finger โ€” left digits give tens, right digits give ones.
  • Doubling trick: Table of 4 = double of 2; Table of 6 = double of 3; Table of 8 = double of 4.
  • Table of 5: Answers always end in 0 or 5.
  • Table of 10: Just add a zero to the number.
  • Table of 11 (1โ€“9): Repeat the digit (11 ร— 4 = 44).
  • Swap trick: 7 ร— 8 = 8 ร— 7 = 56. Order doesn't matter!
  • Digit sum of 9s table: Digits always add up to 9 (e.g., 9 ร— 6 = 54, 5+4 = 9).
  • Practice daily โ€” even 5 minutes of tables drill builds speed and confidence.
