Do you have a pet at home? Maybe a dog, a cat, or a parrot? Have you seen cows, goats, and hens in your neighbourhood?
Animals are all around us — in our homes, on farms, in forests, in rivers, and even in the sky! Some animals are tiny like ants, and some are huge like elephants. Each animal is special in its own way.
Let us learn about the wonderful animals around us!
We can group animals based on where they live and how they relate to humans:
1. Pet Animals (Domestic Animals kept at home)
These animals live with us at home. We take care of them, feed them, and love them. They give us company and happiness.
Examples: Dog, Cat, Parrot, Fish, Rabbit, Turtle, Hamster.
2. Farm Animals (Domestic Animals kept on farms)
These animals are kept by farmers. They give us food (milk, eggs, meat) or help with work (ploughing, carrying loads).
Examples: Cow, Buffalo, Hen, Goat, Sheep, Horse, Ox, Duck, Pig.
3. Wild Animals
These animals live in forests, jungles, deserts, and rivers. They find their own food and shelter. We should not keep them at home.
Examples: Lion, Tiger, Elephant, Deer, Bear, Monkey, Crocodile, Snake, Wolf.
4. Water Animals (Aquatic Animals)
Some animals live in water — in rivers, ponds, lakes, and oceans.
Examples: Fish, Whale, Dolphin, Octopus, Shark, Turtle, Frog (lives both in water and on land).
5. Animals that Fly
Many animals can fly using wings.
Examples: Birds (sparrow, eagle, parrot), Bat (the only flying mammal), Butterfly, Bee.
Animals eat different kinds of food. We group them by what they eat:
| Type | What They Eat | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Herbivore (plant-eater) | Only plants, grass, leaves, fruits, seeds | Cow, Deer, Rabbit, Elephant, Horse, Goat, Giraffe |
| Carnivore (meat-eater) | Only other animals (meat, fish, insects) | Lion, Tiger, Eagle, Frog, Crocodile, Shark, Snake |
| Omnivore (eats both) | Both plants and animals | Dog, Bear, Crow, Hen, Pig, Human |
Different animals move in different ways depending on their body parts:
| Movement | Body Part Used | Animals |
|---|---|---|
| Walk / Run | Legs | Dog, Cat, Horse, Elephant, Deer |
| Fly | Wings | Sparrow, Eagle, Butterfly, Bat |
| Swim | Fins / Flippers | Fish, Whale, Dolphin, Turtle |
| Crawl | Belly / Many legs | Snake, Snail, Earthworm, Caterpillar |
| Jump / Hop | Strong back legs | Frog, Rabbit, Kangaroo, Grasshopper |
| Climb | Hands / Claws | Monkey, Squirrel, Lizard, Cat |
| Swing | Long arms | Monkey, Gibbon |
The place where an animal naturally lives is called its habitat. Different animals need different habitats:
| Habitat | What It's Like | Animals Found Here |
|---|---|---|
| Forest | Trees, bushes, shade, water | Tiger, Deer, Monkey, Snake, Elephant |
| Desert | Hot, dry, sandy, very little water | Camel, Lizard, Scorpion, Desert Fox |
| Water (River/Ocean) | Freshwater or saltwater | Fish, Whale, Dolphin, Crocodile, Turtle |
| Grassland | Open fields with grass | Zebra, Lion, Deer, Rabbit |
| Polar regions | Very cold, ice and snow | Polar Bear, Penguin, Seal, Arctic Fox |
| Our homes | Houses, buildings | Dog, Cat, Rat, Cockroach, Lizard |
| Animal | Baby Name | Sound | Group Name |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dog | Puppy | Barks | Pack |
| Cat | Kitten | Mews / Purrs | — |
| Cow | Calf | Moos | Herd |
| Hen | Chick | Clucks | Flock |
| Horse | Foal | Neighs | Herd |
| Lion | Cub | Roars | Pride |
| Duck | Duckling | Quacks | Flock |
| Frog | Tadpole | Croaks | Army |
| Sheep | Lamb | Bleats | Flock |
| Elephant | Calf | Trumpets | Herd |
| Goat | Kid | Bleats | Herd |
| Deer | Fawn | Bells | Herd |
Animals help us in many ways:

| Milk | Cow, Buffalo, Goat |
| Eggs | Hen, Duck |
| Wool | Sheep, Yak |
| Silk | Silkworm |
| Honey | Honeybee |
| Help in farming | Ox (ploughing), Horse (carrying loads) |
| Transport | Horse, Camel, Elephant, Donkey |
| Guarding | Dog (guards homes) |
